Maximilian Croyso, a lifetime victim of her cruel father's abuse, Duke Croyso, found herself in an unwanted arranged marriage to the war hero Riftan, a legendary slayer of dragons. These two complete strangers, the brooding Riftan and the shy, nervous Maxi, had little in common at first. However, their dark pasts made them more similar than either could have anticipated, and they soon found acceptance in one another.

Despite their deep love, Maxi realized that she needed more in her life to be fulfilled. While Riftan risked his life on dangerous adventures protecting the Seven Kingdoms, Maxi was left behind. Desperate to prove her worth, Maxi learned healing magic from the impertinent mage Ruth. But when Riftan discovered that this magic was putting her at risk, he was against it, believing that her only responsibility as a lady was to stay safely at home.

What Riftan didn't expect was Maxi's refusal to bow to her expected role and her determination to shape her own fate. Maxi wanted to use her growing skills as a sorceress to fight by Riftan's side, to protect him as much as he protected her. Despite Riftan's opposition, Maxi headed off to the Mage Tower to expand her skills and save his reputation.
